De camino a casa en el autobús, se me ocurrió
pensar por qué es tan difícil ser
diseñador de moda y en su defecto, ser estudiante de esta carrera.
Primero, muchos os sentiréis identificados
conmigo si os digo que en clase de
matemáticas ( aunque me gustaban ) comenzaba siempre, sin darme cuenta a hacer
garabatos en las esquinas de los libros. Garabatos sin forma que pretendían ser vestidos, o dibujos
pseudo-estéticos.
En España, cuando llegas al último año de la
eduación secundaria obligatoria, lo que en Colombia viene a ser grado Décimo,
debes decidir cuál será la especialización de los dos años siguientes restantes
antes de entrar a la universidad.
Depende de la carrera que tengas en mente estudiar, te enfocas en la
rama científica, social, tecnológica y..... Artística.
La última, es una de las más amadas y temidas
al mismo tiempo. No falta la pregunta ¿y bueno, cómo sobrevivir con una carrera
de artes?
Las artes, no son obligadas para nadie; al
menos eso creo. Pero las que sí lo son: derecho, economía, psicología, medicina...
¿Y la
cara de tus padres cuando se enteran de que estudiarás diseño? ¿y los ojos
desorbitados cuando se enteran de que será diseño, de modas?
Además, empezar a pensar cuánto costarán los
materiales, te da dolores de cabeza.
Alguién quiere verme “bilirrubínico”? Que me
diga: “Diseño es solamente cortar y coser”.
Una vez has dado el paso decisivo en contra de
todos aquellos comentarios de desánimo, desaliento. “ Terminarás siendo un costurero de barrio”, me
decían...
Entras a la que será tu alma mater, en este
caso por 3 años, y comienzas a ver todo de una manera diferente, pero diferente
en el mal sentido de la palabra. Yo personalmente pensaba que la universidad de
diseño sería un espacio para compartir charlas intelectuales sobre arte,
movimientos que influenciaron el mundo de la moda, vestuario de cine, técnicas artísticas.
Y no, no es así. No por el recinto como tal,
sino por aquellos que estudian esto sin vocación. Por aquellos que lo hacen
pensando en ser Valentino de la noche a la mañana, pero que en realidad no saben
enhebrar una aguja.
No es necesario ser elitista, superficial, o
materialista para saber quiénes tienen aquella “chispa”, tan solo tener
argumentos para defender la carrera de diseño ya es suficiente para no ser “otro
más”.
Los textíles tienen una historia propia para
contar, química y matemáticamente. De la misma manera adaptarlos a la anatomía
humana. ¿Es solo cortar y coser?
En todo caso, aquí lo que importa es el tema
de la frustración personal. ¿Qué
creativo sobreviviría a un cubículo, haciendo contabilidad financiera? Seguro
hay quienes lo han hecho, pero sinceramente que desperdicio.
Y aunque suene a frase de cajón “ Haz lo que te apasiona”. Lo digo yo, que me especialicé en economía y administración de empresas antes de entrar a la universidad, y ahora me arrepiento de haberlo hecho, no sin antes agradecer el haber tomado la decisión correcta y querer lo que hago, no hacer que quiero.

On my way to home, it occurred to me why it is
so hard to be fashion designer? and also be a student of this career?
First, many of you will feel identified with
me when I say that in math class (although I liked maths) always I began,
without realizing, to scribble in the corners of the books. Scribbles, shapeless dresses pretending to be
a pseudo-aesthetic designs.
In Spain, when you get to the last year of obligatory
secondary eduation, which in Colombia becomes Tenth grade, you must decide the
specialization you’ll take the two years before entering college. It
depends on the career you have in mind to study, you focus on the field of
science, social, technological and ..... Artistic.
The latter is one of the most loved and feared
at the same time. Do not miss the question and well, how to survive an arts
career?
The arts are not obligated to anyone, at least
I think. But those that do are: law, economics, psychology, medicine ...
And the face of your parents when you say that
you will study design? What wide-eyed when they realise that will be fashion,
design?
Also, start thinking about how much the
materials cost, gives you headaches.
Someone wants to see me really upset? Say:
"Design is just cut and sew."
Once you've taken the decisive step against
all those comments discouragement, despondency. "You end up being a sewing
neighborhood," they said to me...
You start on will be your alma mater, in this
case for three years, and you start to see everything in a different way, but
different in the bad sense of the word.
I personally thought that the university would
be a space to share intellectual talks about art, movements that influenced the
world of fashion, film costumes, artistic techniques.
And no, it is not. Not at the venue itself,
but by those who study this without calling. For those who think be Valentino
overnight, but they really do not know threading a needle.
You musn’t be elitist, superficial, or
materialistic. To know who have that "spark", you only need arguments to defend the design
career , that is not to be "another
one".
Fabrics has a story to tell itself, chemically
and mathematically. Similarly adapted to the human anatomy. Is it just cut and
sew?
In any case, what matters here is the issue of
personal frustration. What creative survive a cubicle, doing financial
accounting? Sure some people have, but honestly what a waste.
And although it may sound cliché, "Do
what you love." I’m telling you, that I majored in economics and business
administration before going to college, and now I regret it, but not before
thanking for having made the right decision and like what I do, don’t do what I
like.

totally agree with you! I'm studying textiles at A-level (along with maths and psychology) and people think it's just an easy option, it's the most difficult!

En mi caso personal me encanta muchas de las artes plásticas y textiles. Pero me decidi a estudiar primeramente secretariado y ahora administración de negocios, vieras que no me arrepiento me encanta mi trabajo porque es muy versati. Y las artes las tomo como mi gran pasión, espero más adelante poder estudiar alguna carrera de arte. Creo que las dos cosas se pueden dar si tenemos un balance correcto.
